Gardai have appealed for witnesses to come forward with information on the brutal stabbing of a young man in Dublin on Wednesday night.

Mr Brian Kelly (23) is recovering in intensive care in St James's Hospital after he was stabbed in the neck in Walkinstown before his car was stolen.

Gardaí say he received a deep stab wound to the neck in the car-park of The Halfway House bar at 8.40 p.m. but managed to cross the road to the bar where he sought help before collapsing.

"It was a deep straight-in stab to his neck rather than a slash," said a Garda source last night. They believe the man was stabbed either for money and his car keys or because he disturbed someone stealing his car.

They confirmed that his 99 MH-registered silver Ford Focus hatchback was stolen that night and are appealing to the public to contact them with any information on the car.

A number of witnesses have come forward but none who actually witnessed the attack on Mr Kelly, according to Garda sources.

They are appealing for anyone who noticed suspicious behaviour near Walkinstown Road and Drimnagh Road junction either before or after the incident on Wednesday night to report to Crumlin Garda station at 01-6666200.
