Reports that former taoiseach Charles Haughey is keeping a very low profile these days as he recovers from one tribunal, McCracken, and prepares for another, Moriarty, are greatly exaggerated.
He was spotted at the best table in Patrick Guilbaud's restaurant in Dublin's new Merrion Hotel last Tuesday, having lunch with two gentlemen. Government Buildings (or the Chas Mahal, on which he did such a magnificent job) is right across the road. So from his position he could observe all comings and goings in the restaurant and as he left, at a very respectable hour shortly after 3 p.m., he embraced several women at a nearby table. Quidnunc's informant says he looked remarkably well.
