Strong winds have delayed the completion of Dublin's Spire, and the remaining three sections will not now be attached until the weekend.

Engineers had hoped to finish the assembly of the monument by midnight.

All the remaining sections are on site except for the tip, which left Waterford at 1 a.m. A Dublin City Council spokeswoman said a lot of work has still to be done near the base of the Spire.

Weighing 120 tonnes, the Spire is a hollow cone shape and is just six inches in diameter at the top and three metres at its base.

When finished, the structure, which cost €4.6 million, will be seven times the height of the nearby GPO.
