The next report by General John de Chastelain's weapons decommissioning body on his contacts with the IRA and loyalist paramilitaries will make "dismal" reading, a hardline unionist Assembly member claimed tonight.
After an hour-long meeting with the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning in Belfast, Northern Ireland Unionist Party leader Mr Cedric Wilson detected "a sense of disillusionment" over its dealings with paramilitary groups.
The Strangford MLA said: "General de Chastelain is preparing an end of term report for the British and Irish Governments which is going to make dismal reading.
"He told us he intends to give them a full account of his work, warts and all, and certainly it appears no movement on the disarmament issue is likely in the near future."
Mr Wilson said: "Certainly there appears to be a sense of disillusionment over the way decommissioning has proceeded.
"There also appears to be no great optimism that General de Chastelain will be able to oversee his remit which is total IRA and loyalist paramilitary disarmament.
"Certainly, if it continues at the rate it is going, even the General concedes he could be there for years."
