Defending champion Serena Williams needed just 54 minutes to book her place in the second round of the French Open today.

The world number one, current holder of all the grand slam titles, thrashed Barbara Rittner of Germany 6-2, 6-1.

Williams (21) showed her class early by breaking Rittner in the third game, a backhand dropshot on the line giving her a 2-1 lead. Rittner hit back immediately, however, to level the set at 2-2.

But Williams's superlative returns and overall power proved too much and the German managed to win just one more game.

Williams was so dominant in the second set that she needed only 10 minutes to grab a 4-0 lead and eventually wrapped up the match by breaking Rittner's serve to love.

She will play either Angelique Widjaja's or Marie-Gaiane Mikaelian in the next round.

Frenchwoman Emilie Loit caused a minor surprise by sending 29th seed Elena Likhovtseva of Russia home early.

Loit, a 23-year-old from Cherbourg who made it to the third round in two of the past three years, won 6-3 6-2 on Court 1.
