Celtic midfielder Morten Wieghorst ended his six-year stint at Parkhead today by agreeing to reunite with old team-mate Marc Rieper at Danish club Brondby.
The former Denmark international star joined Celtic in 1996 from Dundee and had only recently returned from a life-threatening illness to challenge for a first-team place.
Hoops boss Martin O'Neill offered Wieghorst a new one-year deal to win his place back in midfield, but the lure of a return to Denmark and the offer of three-year contract convinced him to move on.
He played a pivotal role in Wim Jansen's Celtic side which prevented Rangers clinching 10 championships in a row in season 1997-98 - but life took a turn for the worse when he contracted Guillain-Barre syndrome.
Wieghorst has now made a full recovery from the debilitating condition, but has opted to return to his homeland.
Wieghorst told www.celticfc.net: "I have had many tremendous years at Celtic, and it just great to have played some part at such a fantastic club.
"I would like to thank the manager, players and backroom staff at Celtic for all the support they have given me, and I would also like to thank the fans for their great support, particularly the support they gave to me during my recent illness. I will never forget that.
"Obviously I wish Celtic the very best of success in the future, and it is my hope that they can continue the recent run of successes at he club." -PA
