A five-year-old boy in Co Wicklow has been badly injured after he picked up a pipe bomb which then exploded.

A five-year-old boy in Co Wicklow has been badly injured after he picked up a pipe bomb which then exploded.

The boy suffered substantial injuries to his hands in the incident which happened at a house on Sycamore Drive in Newtownmountkennedy at about 8.30am.

The boy was transferred to Crumlin children's hospital where he underwent an operation this morning. His condition is described as serious.

The area was sealed off and door-to-door searches were being carried out. A Garda forensic examination is taking place.

Gardaí are asking anyone who was in the Sycamore Drive area of Newtownmountkennedy between 9pm last night and 8am  this morning to contact them.

Gardaí are also asking anyone in the Newtownmountkennedy area who may have noticed any unusual or suspicious activity overnight or in the last number of weeks to contact them at Bray Garda station on 01-6665300.
