Rome - A syndicate of 100 people from one town scooped Italy's biggest lottery jackpot at the weekend to silence a bout of national soul-searching about whether $40 million was too large a sum for any one person to win.
The lucky winners in the small town of Peschici had paid $15 each to pool any winnings in a computer-generated group bet and came away with almost $400,000 each. "The whole town won," said one resident of Peschici, on the Adriatic coast in southern Italy.
