The Cabinet yesterday agreed to include whistleblower protection in criminal justice legislation currently being fast-tracked through the Dáil. Minister for Justice Alan Shatter said the measures would be included in the Criminal Justice Bill 2011, which largely deals with white-collar crime and will be enacted before the summer recess later this month.

Section 19 also provides for a new offence of failing to provide information to the Garda about white-collar offences.

Mr Shatter said that as a counter-balance, people who comply with this measure will be protected against dismissal or suffering penalties.
