Will Twink ever look round? James Dunne, editor of the just-launched TV NOW! magazine, tries to catch her attention. "It's her birthday today," he explains. (Don't ask her her age, someone counsels. Righto, we won't.) "Adele!" he calls. Adele King, holding a large bouquet of flowers, doesn't hear. She turns to throw a farewell kiss to singer Linda Martin before she exits. Ah, well, there goes the country's latest agony aunt and a golden opportunity for any and all the lost souls at the party in Conrad Gallagher's Ocean Bar & Restaurant to cry on her shoulder. ("Tell Twink . . . she knows the answers because she's been there," urges Ireland's newest tv listings magazine). Other stars at the bash on Charlotte Quay include TV NOW contributor Celia Larkin; Louis Walsh; Eileen Murphy; and Sonia Reynolds with her husband Barry Lyons and their seven-week-old baby, Char- lie. ail senator Seamus Ryan, of Tipperary, say?
Downstairs, in the company of sisters Catherine and Brid O'Flaherty, is Michael O'Doherty, co-publisher with John Ryan of the new magazine. What of their partnership? "I think we complement each other." he says. "If we were U2, John would be Bono and I'd be Adam Clayton. If we were the Rolling Stones, he'd be Mick Jagger and I'd be Bill Wyman. If we were cars he'd be a Ferrari and I'd be a Renault Scenic." Designer Cuan Hanly and dancer Jean Butler turn up. What fashion tips can Hanly give to men who want to look ace? "Wear clothes," he says pithily. "Trousers are good, jackets are OK but optional. On private occasions you needn't wear clothes." We call a halt here, this being a family newspaper and all that.
