A wheelchair-bound child who has severe spinal and other injuries following a road accident five years ago is to be paid £1 million under a settlement approved at the High Court.

John Enright, now aged seven, suing by his mother, Mrs Mary Enright, of Newcastlewest, Co Limerick, had sued Mr Donal Crosbie, Kilfinny, Co Limerick, following an accident at Kilfinny. The defence denied the claim.

On the application of Mr James O'Driscoll SC Mr Justice Johnson approved the settlement.

Mr O'Driscoll said liability was an issue in the case and proving negligence would be difficult. It was claimed John was struck by a car owned or driven by Mr Crosbie at Kilfinny village on November 14th, 1993. He was rendered unconscious and taken to Limerick Regional Hospital. On December 17th, 1993, he was transferred to the National Rehabilitation Centre.
