The health strategy reveals that the average pay in 2000 for health service staff in health boards was in the region of £24,500 (€31,108).
It gives details of what various categories of staff earned:
A staff nurse at the top of the scale: £31,000
Therapy professional (e.g. physiotherapist, speech and language therapist or occupational therapist) at mid-point of the scale: £25,218
Radiographer on basic grade, including on-call allowances: excess of £35,000
Clerical worker, based on grades III to VII: £19,402
Hospital consultant in the public health service, excluding any private earnings: £100,000
Non-consultant hospital doctor at senior house officer grade: basic pay of less than £30,000, but average earnings, including on-call, were in the region of £60,000
General practitioner in the General Medical Services (GMS) scheme: average payment of £72,700, including allowances.
