KUWAIT - A Kuwaiti Islamist politician yesterday stepped into a dispute over a Christian convert who fears for his life after being branded an apostate. Mr Khaled al Adwa told the Kuwait Times that the country's Islamists did not want an international furore over Mr Robert Hussein (45) and he told the west it had no right to preach to Muslims about human rights.

Pressure groups in the US and Britain have protested to Kuwait's embassies against what they call a death sentence against Mr Hussein.

A Shin Muslim family court in Kuwait declared Mr Hussein an apostate on May 29th. Mr Hussein, in hiding for fear of reprisals, will challenge the ruling in the appeal court on September 15th.
