Aer Rianta is forecasting its busiest bank holiday weekend, with a record 286,000 passengers expected to pass through its three airports by Monday. Met Eireann says it will be a bright though cool Whit weekend. Tomorrow and Sunday will be sunny, though cool with scattered showers. Aer Rianta says it will handle 15 per cent more passengers in Dublin Airport than it did over the June bank holiday last year, while Shannon and Cork will see rises of 12 per cent and 10 per cent respectively.
Aer Lingus expects to carry more than 132,000 customers, with more than 26,000 travelling between Ireland and London Heathrow. The number travelling on the airline represents a 19 per cent increase on last year. Ryanair is expecting to carry 120,000 passengers, a 20 per cent increase on this time last year.
Up to 200,000 will travel on Iarnrod Eireann rail services. An extra 20 trains will be added to the usual schedule. Special services will run for fans travelling to Sunday's Munster hurling championship fixture in Cork and to the Leinster football championship games in Dublin.
On Sunday and Monday, services will operate almost as normal. DART services will run as normal until Monday, when a Sunday schedule will operate with minor alterations. There will be no suburban trains on Monday on the Dublin-Arklow, Dublin-Dundalk, Dublin-Kildare or Dublin-Maynooth routes.
Bus Eireann expects to carry more than 100,000 passengers on its Expressway and provincial services. It says normal timetables will operate today and tomorrow, with additional buses on the major routes. On Sunday, services will operate as normal with minor alterations.
On Monday services will operate as on Sundays with a number of alterations and extra services on routes to major centres. Ste na Line expects to carry 56,000 passengers and 10,000 cars between Ireland and Britain.
Leinster
In Dublin, Barney's Lane at the Airmotive junction on the Naas Road has reopened. There are roadworks on Ballyogan Road near Kilgobbin junction. Works continue on the Stepa side-Sandyford road; on Dorset Street Lower; on St Mobhi Drive and on Eglinton Road. Major cabling works are in place on Stradbrook Road, Blackrock. Severe delays can be expected this evening on the Stillorgan Road travelling south. Gas works continue on Anglesea Road between Simmons court and Merrion Road.
Clonliffe Road will be single lane between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. today and tomorrow. Stocking Lane in Rathfarnham will be closed at the interface with the proposed route on the Southern Cross Motorway. In Wexford, resurfacing work continues on the N11 south of the Arklow bypass between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. In Westmeath, the new N4-N6 link road is open in Kinnegad, which will ease east-west traffic on the N6. Construction of a new sewerage system in Kilcullen, Co Kildare, is delaying traffic in Main Street. In Kilkenny, there are roadworks on the N76 between Kilkenny and Callan at Shellumsrath. Temporary lights are in operation. Laois sees resurfacing works continue in Abbeyleix, while in Louth, work continues on the N2 north of Ardee. In Offaly, resurfacing work on the N7 at Dunkerrin on the Cork side of Roscrea continues.
Munster
In Cork, the new Jack Lynch Tunnel has been opened. Traffic and parking will not be allowed at Lancaster Quay on the right-hand side between the junctions with Little Hanover Street and Woods Street. There is no parking at Morrison's Quay from Trinity Bridge as far as the junction with Catherine Street. Roman Street and Cathedral Street are one way from John Street to the North Cathedral; city-bound traffic is diverted at the cathedral. Gas works continue on the South Mall.
In Limerick there are new restrictions at Baal's Bridge and Nichol's Street and new traffic signals at Athlunkard Street and Island Road.
Connacht
In Mayo, work will be carried out over the next two weeks on the Lower Bridge in Ballina, on the N59 Ballina to Sligo road. Realignment works on the N16 Sligo to Enniskillen Road, about 4 miles west of Manorhamilton, continue in Leitrim.
Ulster
In Derry there will be roadworks on the A2 Strand Road at Meadowbank. In Donegal, there are roadworks on Main Street, Stranorlar, with a one-way system and diversion. Information supplied by AA Roadwatch
