More than 250,000 restaurants, hotels and bars across the State face being 'named and shamed' on the Internet if they fail to comply with the food safety laws, food safety group EduCater has warned.

Last year 51 food businesses were closed down because they failed to comply with the law.

The organisations were publicly listed on the Food Safety Authority's (FSAI) website and their suppliers incurred multi-million pound losses.

EduCater's education and training specialist Ms Annette Sweeney said it would be commercial suicide for organisations to ignore the food safety laws.

Ms Sweeney said: "It is not just food business owners who must comply with or face the full rigour of the law but also managers and the individual food handler in all organisations where food is handled, including hotels, pubs, restaurants, supermarkets, food retailers and manufacturers, hospitals and schools."

"This law affects tens of thousands of people," she said.

EduCater has launched a new in-house training programme for organisations to train their staff how to handle food safely.
