There has been heavy snowfalls in much of the midlands and Lenister this afternoon, although they did not reach Dublin.

After earlier snow and wintery showers there were some sunny spells in parts of the west and northwest later today.

Temperatures could rise to between four and seven degrees in the west of the country but will remain around zero in most areas.

Tonight, wintry showers are expected to move eastwards across the country with further snow accumulations. Temperatures are forecast to fall to about minus six degrees. A sharp and severe frost is likely to render roads and pavements icy again and freezing fog may occur in some parts of the country.

Travel Information:

Luas:

The red line is currently operating in both directions between Tallaght and the Point. However, the Connolly Station stop is not in use because of the conditions.

The green line is running in both directions between Sandyford and St Stephen's Green. A replacement coach service is operating between Sandyford and Ballyogan.

Dublin Bus:

The majority of Dublin Bus services are running but some routes have been curtailed or diverted. Nitelink services will not operate tonight.

Irish Rail:

Irish Rail said it expects almost all its Intercity, Dart and Commuter services to continue operating today but with delays.

Dart and Commuter trains are taking 15 to 30 minutes longer because of point problems.

Services from Heuston Station in Dublin are delayed for 40 to 50 minutes because of multiple point problems.

The Parkway to Clonsilla commuter route has been suspended and a bus transfer is operating from Dunboyne to Phoenix Park station.

Bus Eireann:

Most Bus Éireann services around the country are operating as normal with delays and diversions on some routes.

The Expressway service between Dublin and Rosslare has been suspended pending a review and there have been some cancellations on the Dublin to Waterford and Clonmel routes.

Dublin Airport:

Dublin Airport is fully operational today but the Dublin Airport Authority has warned of minor delays to the flight schedule.

Passengers are advised to consult with their airline's website before coming to the airport.

Ferries:

Irish Ferries said its services were running to schedule today and Stena Line has not reported any delays or cancellations.

Roads:

AA Roadwatch says extreme care should be taken on the N2 Dublin to Monaghan road via Ashbourne, Slane and Collon as many hills are barely passable.

Visibility is reportedly poor along the M7 Dublin to Cork road with freezing fog occurring in some places.

There are delays on the N4 Dublin to Sligo road between Rooskey and Newtownforbes because of a burst water main.

Black Ice has developed on the N11 Dublin to Wexford road along the Gorey bypass. The Riverchapel/Courtown Rd is also reported to be impassable.

Motorists have been advised to drive with care on the M8 Dublin to Cork road, particularly between the Thurles and Cashel junctions, because of ice patches.
