Waterford 2-23 Tipperary 3-12
Waterford won their first Munster hurling title since 1963 with a breathtaking victory over Tipperary at Pairc Ui Chaoimh today.
Justin McCarthy’s side, so often the bridesmaid on the big occasion, shone through on a day when the Tipperary machine failed to find their best form.
But credit Waterford for their tenacity as they were the better side throughout and showed admirable courage when refusing to bow under Tipperary pressure early in the second half.
Half forwards Ken McGrath and Paul Flynn turned in outstanding performances and sent the Waterford fans on the terraces into delirium.
Flynn netted the game’s opening goal in the 17th minute to put Waterford one point ahead but Tipperary snatched a goal of their own through Eoin Kelly to lead 1-10 to 1-9 at half-time.
Tipperary kicked on after the break and exerted heavy pressure on Waterford’s defence from the throw-in.
Half-forward Benny Dunne showed his predatory instincts with two fine goals in the 38th and 46th minutes. The second goal had brought the sides level for the sixth time.
But Waterford refused to buckle and instead raised their game ten fold.
Star players Ken McGrath and Tony Browne etched their mark on the game with fine individual and ultimately match-winning performances. Browne’s goal in the 53rd minute propelled Waterford into a three point lead.
Waterford dominated the closing stages and racked up further scores from McGrath, Seamus Prendergast and John Mullane to secure an eight-point victory and a long overdue title.
