FESTIVAL WATCH: NEW YAM AND MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL
THE IGBO community in Ireland will celebrate its fourth New Yam Festival tomorrow.
The festival is a traditional annual event organised by the Igbo tribe of Nigeria in thanksgiving to God for a good harvest and in celebration of numerous other achievements.
This year's New Yam Festival begins at 2pm tomorrow with a procession from Parnell Square in Dublin which will then move to Smithfield Square on Arran Quay.
The general public is invited to join in the festivities, which will feature cultural dances and traditional dishes from countries such as Nigeria, Cameroon, Mauritius, Guinea and Libya.
Kema Chikwe, the Nigerian ambassador to Ireland, and the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Eibhlin Byrne, will co-host the event.

Among the many Heritage Week events taking place today are: the Blue Heaven Barbershop Chorus performance at St Mary's Abbey in Dublin at 1pm (free); and Go Batty at Birr Castle, Co Offaly, a bat walk around the castle led by Dr Tina Aughney of Bat Conservation Ireland, from 8pm to 10pm (free). www.heritageweek.ie.
