The US Defense Secretary said today the US-led war on terrorism "is still in its early stages," despite successes in the fight against the Taliban and the al-Qaeda network of Saudi-born militant Osama bin Laden.
"The war on terrorism is still in its early stages," Mr Donald Rumsfeld said at a press conference held in the Pentagon.
"Our immediate military objectives remain the destruction of the Al Qaeda network, the Taliban leadership and the end of Afghanistan as a place where terrorists are harboured.
"But I also want to emphasise that, as enemy leaders become fewer and fewer, that does not necessarily mean that the task will become easier. People can hide in caves for long periods, and this will take time," he said.
