Visitors are being asked to stay away from the Sacred Heart Hospital in Carlow and St Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny due to the winter vomiting virus.

The number of cases of winter vomiting virus at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Carlow has risen to 26 patients and 12 staff according to the South Eastern Health Board.

Three members of staff at the 100-bed hospital are currently off work.

Meanwhile five patients and one member of staff at St Luke's are reportedly showing symptoms of the virus.

Both hospitals remains closed to non-essential visitors. Admissions to Carlow hospital have been curtailed.
