The Western Regional Fisheries Board has said that it is “vital” that outdated sewage plants in the west are replaced as soon as possible.

Board chief executive Dr Greg Forde was commenting on the outcome of a recent case taken by the board against Galway County Council for pollution of the Clonbur river and Lough Mask.

The local authority was fined €500 for breaches of the fisheries Acts, following pollution caused by discharges from the sewage treatment works at Clonbur, Co Galway. Judge Mary Fahy also directed that the county council pay monitoring costs of €650 and the fisheries board’s legal costs of €627.

The local authority has begun constructing a new sewage treatment plant at Clonbur.
