Virus experts arrive at Glasgow hospital

An outbreak control team is on its way to a Glasgow hospital where a virus has affected nearly 200 people

An outbreak control team is on its way to a Glasgow hospital where a virus has affected nearly 200 people. Victoria Infirmary has had to cancel all non-urgent admissions.

So far 130 patients and 57 staff have been identified as having either confirmed or probable infections from the viral outbreak.

Yesterday, a further 25 people were showing symptoms.

Dr David Stewart, associate medical director of South Glasgow University Hospitals Trust, says the control team believes the spread of the bug is now decreasing.

The trust has cancelled 88 non-urgent operations, to ease the pressure on Glasgow's Southern General hospital to which non life-threatening emergency admissions are being diverted.

The "winter vomiting" virus emerged on Thursday, the same day it was disclosed three patients had died earlier in an unrelated outbreak of salmonella poisoning.
