Virgin Trains today confirmed it intends to halve its rail fares in an attempt to lure dissatisfied passengers back to its trains.

Virgin said will cut fares by 50 per cent in February. The offer applies across the board to both First and Standard Class tickets including Savers, weekly season tickets and Virgin Value advance purchase tickets, it added.

The move means the cheapest return fares on routes like London to Manchester and Liverpool will start from £10 sterling return and on London to Birmingham from £7.50 sterling return, it said.
