The winner of this year's Turner Prize for Art, announced at the Tate Gallery last night, is Birmingham-born Ms Gillian Wearing writes Luke Clancy.
Ms Wearing topped a shortlist which, for the first time, featured only women artists.
Her work, seen at the Irish Museum of Modern Art earlier this year, uses video and photography to track individuals normally hidden in the urban crowd. Speaking of the prize to The Irish Times earlier this year, Ms Wearing said: "I've no idea what winning the Turner prize would mean. I know that you can't hope for it."
