A MOTHER has urged the Director of Public Prosecutions to appeal against the leniency of a three year sentence imposed on the paedophile who abused her seven year old son.

The Fianna Fail TD, Mr Ben Briscoe, has also called on the DPP to lodge an appeal, describing it as "a dreadful case".

The DPP has until tomorrow evening to appeal.

Bruce Thompson was jailed for, three years by Judge Kieran O'Connor in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court last month when hem pleaded guilty for sexual abusing four boys over an 18 year period.

He had two previous convictions for indecently assaulting young boys in England.

A detective told the court that while Thompson had admitted the assaults, he had not shown any remorse.

The mother of the boy who was abused at the age of seven said her son, now aged nine, was still very emotionally disturbed because of the abuse.

She said as matters stood Thompson, who has been in custody since August 1995, would be free by Christmas.
