Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar is asking local authorities to carry out a review of the nation’s roads to correct inappropriately set limits, writes Eoghan Mac Connell.

Although 2011 was the best year on record for road safety, “a big issue in road fatalities is speeding and it is important motorists respect the speed limits but it is also important that we respect the motorist,” said Mr Varadkar.

“I think everyone knows of places where speed limits are inappropriately high or inappropriately low. I am asking the NRA and councils to use their local knowledge to review speed limits that may be inappropriate.”
