The US service sector expanded slightly in August, according to a report released today.
The Institute for Supply Management said its non-manufacturing index came in at 50.6 for August from July's 49.5. A reading above 50 signals expansion.
Economists expected an unchanged result of 49.5, with the majority of forecasts ranged from 48.5 to 50.5.
The service sector represents about 80 per cent of US economic activity, including businesses such as banks, airlines, hotels and restaurants.
