US forces suffered new casualties in fighting in the southern city of Nasiriyah, US commanders said this afternoon without giving any figures.

Major General Victor Renuart, director of operations for the US Central Command, said the next of kin had not been notified of the casualties from the battle at the key Euphrates River passageway.

"We have had some casualties and we will confirm them as soon as that [notification] is complete," he said.

But he added that US-led forces had inflicted more casualties on the Iraqis.
