US Marines pounded the Iraqi town of Fallujah with mortars today in a bid to remove remaining pockets of guerrillas.
Marines began firing mortars late at night and intensified the attacks to facilitate what they called clean up operations to clear the city of weapons and insurgents who survived a weeklong offensive.
US forces which launched the offensive on the rebel bastion say they have taken control of the town but scattered resistance remains.
US officials say more than 1,000 insurgents have been killed and more than 1,000 arrested in the battle to take the mainly Sunni Muslim city.
