US special forces today captured a half-brother of Saddam Hussein, Central Command said.

Barzan Ibrahim al-Tikriti was a presidential adviser to Saddam and had "extensive knowledge of the regime's workings," US Brig Gen Vincent Brooks said.

There had been reports that Al-Tikriti, who is suspected of helping the Iraqi dictator move millions of pounds into secret overseas accounts, was killed in a coalition air strike last Friday.

The former director of Iraqi Intelligence and its notorious secret service, known as the Mukhabarat, is believed to have tortured and murdered thousands of opponents of the regime.
