Washington - The United States said yesterday that it was deeply concerned by reports that eight foreign aid workers, including two Americans, detained in Afghanistan, had been moved by the Taliban militia to the southern city of Kandahar from Kabul ahead of its fall to the Northern Alliance.

"We have seen the reports that the detainees were probably moved from Kabul by the Taliban," State Department spokesman Mr Richard Boucher said.

"We do not have independent word on that but we remain very concerned about the status and the welfare of our detainees," he said.
