A group of US citizens living in Ireland are to hold a peace vigil outside the US Embassy in Ballsbridge, Dublin this evening.

They will call for an alternative to war and further violence following the September 11th attacks on America.

The organiser of US Citizens in Ireland for an Alternative to War, Ms Mary Vanlieshout, said everyone who wanted to see an alternative was invited to attend the vigil.

"The loss of life in New York, Washington and Pennsylvannia is tragic but nothing will be solved by creating more dead and greater suffering. The answer to this terrible act is not revenge but to use the international institutions of justice".

Another member of the group, Ms Carole Craig, said there was an increasing culture of revenge in the United States.

"Supporters of the death penalty have promoted the idea that revenge is somehow a cleansing process, whereas the people who actually come through grieving best are they ones who learn to forgive and find love," she said.

The vigil will be between 5.30 and 6.30 p.m. outside the US embassy. There will be speakers and a poster board on which people can write messages that will be forwarded to the US government.
