A Lufthansa plane heading to the United States from Germany made an unscheduled landing in Dublin this evening after the airline received a call saying there was a suspect device on board.

A spokeswoman for Dublin Airport Authority said the Boeing 747-400, en route from Frankfurt to Newark, landed at 3.40 p.m. and its 370 passengers and crew were disembarked.

A Lufthansa spokeswoman said there were 18 crew members and 373 passengers on board. "It was re-routed into Dublin because apparently Lufthansa had received a call to their call centre saying there was a suspect device aboard," the airport spokeswoman said.

Gardai are to search the aircraft, she added.
