At least 13 of the militants have escaped from the school, it was reported this afternoon.
The Interfax news agency has reported that the militants are in a nearby house which has been surrounded by troops.
The militants who are understood to be heading for a rail junction in the town of Beslan officials said.
Tank fire has been heard in the area of the house.
