ICTU and the Irish National Teachers' Organisation have backed a campaign by night students to make tax relief on part time study more widely available. The group, Night Students for Equality, said a tax concession introduced by the Minister for Education this year was of no use to the majority, since it did not extend to students who had taken a previous course.
The INTO general secretary, Senator Joe O'Toole, said it seemed "perverse" that the Government should discriminate against students who were the targets of support during the European Year of Lifelong Learning.
