UNICEF Ireland is appealing for aid to help children and their families affected by last Saturday's earthquake in El Salvador.

The death toll after the quake is expected to exceed 1,000, as current tolls are estimating between 600 and 900 fatalities. UNICEF believes more than 4,000 people are still missing.

Executive Director of UNICEF Ireland Ms Maura Quinn said: "Urgent emergency relief is of top priority to help bring a sense of normality for the families and their children left traumatised by the earthquake".

The organisation also hopes to put in place water tanks, water purification tablets, and portable latrines for the displaced, provide medical supplies and drugs to fight the spread of disease, replace educational supplies and school kits, provide psychosocial training for volunteers, teachers, relief officials and others working with affected populations and to put in place teams of specialists who can assist local authorities in arranging care for unaccompanied children.
