DUBLIN - The United Nations children's aid agency, Unicef, is appealing for public donations to fund emergency work in Lebanon. The agency says it needs more than $2.5 million to provide drugs and medical equipment and to repair two water plants in Beirut which have been badly damaged by the Israeli bombardment.
The relief work is aimed mainly at the 120,000 people who Unicef says are sheltering in public buildings or Unifil posts. Ten per cent of the displaced are children under five, and 5 per cent are pregnant or nursing mothers.
