United Nations - The UN Security Council last night voted unanimously to end the UN peacekeeping mission in Angola, following the collapse of peace accords.
The 15-member council voted in favour of a resolution which provides for the "technical liquidation" by the end of next month of the 1,000-strong UN observer mission, which had been tasked with monitoring the implementation of 1994 peace accords.
The secretary general, Mr Kofi Annan, issued a statement saying that it was "tragic" that the government and UNITA rebels had failed to seize the opportunity of achieving peace and national reconciliation. The accords collapsed at the end of last year when UNITA rebels - condemned by the security council for failing to comply with the peace accords - and government forces resumed fighting.
