NAIROBI - Nigerian author and activist Ken Saro Wiwa was yesterday posthumously elected to the United Nations Environment Programme's, Global 500 Roll of Honour for advancing environmental protection.
UNEP named Saro Wiwa as one of 21 recipients of the award, saying: "Ken Saro Wiwa led the resistance of the Ogoni people against the pollution of their delta homeland in, Nigeria.
"At all stages of his campaign, Saro Wiwa advocated peaceful resistance to the forces that would deprive the Ogoni people of a say in the develops meat of their region."
