The British government has published a new booklet to warn children and parents about the dangers of using chat-rooms on the Internet.

Under the slogan "Wise-Up to the Net", the booklet offers advice to parents on how to monitor their children’s use of the Internet and highlights the threat posed by paedophiles establishing relationships with children in chat-rooms.

With the help of ChildLine, Childnet International, the Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA), the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), the Government has produced the booklet for parents and carers giving advice for safe Net use.

Publication of the book follows the setting up of a task force in Britain in July with the purpose of developing a strategy for children and "safe-browsing".

The book is part of a country-wide campaign to deliver clear and consistent safety messages so that child users can enjoy the benefits of the Internet in safety.

Its website also provides information to help parents advise their children on chatting safely online. As part of the campaign a booklet has been produced that gives additional tips and advice which can be downloaded from the site.

The publication of the booklet follows the arrest of 130 paedophiles operating on the Internet in 19 countries recently.
