A £15 million claim against the British Ministry of Defence after it scrapped plans to fortify British army bases against IRA attacks has been settled in the High Court in Belfast.
The details of the settlement were kept secret, but Mr Justice Coghlin directed that an MoD lodgement, believed to be £1 million, should be paid out.
The claim was brought by J.H. Turkington and Sons, trading as Northern Builders, of Portadown, Co Armagh.
The company claimed that army chiefs contacted it in 1992 with an urgent request to carry out a huge building programme. Senior officers wanted "suitable hardened structures".
The building programme was estimated at £300 million stg, the company claimed. But in November 1994 the ministry announced the programme was being halted and soon afterwards it was cancelled altogether.
