Plans to freeze the UK assets of groups linked to terror suspect Osama bin Laden are being "urgently" considered.

British government officials are reviewing measures to tighten up sources of terrorist income in the UK, the Treasury said.

The Chancellor, Mr Gordon Brown announced last week a list of people believed to be linked to bin Laden had been circulated and a Barclays Bank account in Notting Hill, west London, had been closed.

A spokesman for the Treasury said: "We are considering as a matter of urgency what further steps we could take. People are working on this at the moment. It is an ongoing process."

The news comes as President George W Bush announced a freeze on assets associated with bin Laden held in the US, including those of three non-profit organisations.

Mr Bush said he signed the order one minute after midnight, adding: "This list is just the beginning."

The Taliban's British bank accounts have been frozen since sanctions were imposed in 1999, after the regime refused to hand bin Laden over in the wake of the US embassy attacks in Kenya and Tanzania.
