An honorary degree of Doctor of Laws was conferred on the actor Rosaleen Linehan at University College, Dublin yesterday . She began her acting career as a student at UCD and has played many roles in Ireland and abroad.
Acclaimed recent performances include Kate in Brian Friel`s Dancing at Lughnasa, Hushabye in Heartbreak House, Arkadia in Tom Kilroy's adaption of The Seagull and Feste in Twelfth Night.
Ms Linehan's prizes include the Harvey Theatre Award and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe First. She is well known for television and radio appearances and for her satirical revues.
An honorary Doctor of Laws degree was also conferred on Mr Joseph P. MacHale, who was secretary and bursar of UCD for 33 years and retired in 1987. His financial expertise was legendary and he was also a gifted sportsman. He represented Ireland at tennis and was a member of the 1947-50 Davis Cup team. He was Irish squash champion in 1951 and 1952. He has represented Ireland at bridge almost continually since 1952.
An honorary degree of Doctor of Science was conferred on Prof Lord Lewis of Newnham. A distinguished professor emeritus of inorganic chemistry at Cambridge, he founded Robinson College.
