The US has indefinitely closed its embassies in Bulgaria and Romania after undisclosed threats.
Security checks will be made, said a State Department official, but he refused to reveal any further details.
In Bucharest, public affairs officer Ms Kiki Munchi said the embassy "is closed temporarily from August 30th to review our security posture." She could not say when it would reopen.
Another US diplomat in Bucharest said the closure "was not routine," but refused to elaborate.
State Department spokesman Mr Richard Boucher linked the closures to a worldwide caution for Americans abroad, which was issued on June 22nd
That caution mentioned the possibility of attacks on Americans by groups connected with Saudi-born militant Osama bin Laden, who has been charged with planning the bombings at the US Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998.
