Garda Robert McCallion (29) remains in a critical condition in hospital after being knocked down by a stolen car in Co Donegal yesterday morning.

A 17-year-old was arrested at the scene in Letterkenny. His passenger fled on foot but was arrested near the Silver Tassie Hotel on the road to Milford.

Today, two men appeared before Glenties District Court today in connection with the incident.

A 17-year-old youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury and the theft of a car.

The second man, 19-year-old Cathal Dunleavy of Meentagh, Kerrykeel, Co Donegal was also charged with stealing a car and allowing himself to be carried in the car while knowing it to be stolen.

Both men were remanded in custody until April 2nd when they are scheduled to appear before Letterkenny District Court.

The injured garda originally from Swinford, Co Mayo, has been serving in Letterkenny since he graduated from Templemore Garda College in 2006.

The garda and two colleagues were responding to reports of suspicious activity at the Tara Court estate in Letterkenny at about 4.30am.
