Elsewhere in the county, another male pedestrian (59) was fatally struck at at Silliot Hill, Kildare, at about 7.30am today.
His body has been removed to Naas General Hospital.
Gardaí have asked for any witnesses to contact Athy Garda station (059 8634210), Kildare Garda station (045 527730), or the Garda confidential line (1800 666111).
The roads involved were closed for Garda technical examinations.
Commenting, Kildare county council's road safety officer, Declan Keogh, said it was an awful start to a new year for any family. He also advised people of the importance of wearing a high visibility vest.
"Many people who walk along the road may in general be familiar with the road. However, if they are not visible to other road users by what ever means, their chances of being seeing is reduced to almost zero, until it's too late. These are two incidents which could have been avoided," he added.
