Two more drivers were disqualified from driving last month after receiving 12 penalty points, according to new figures released by the Department of Transport.

The drivers, one from Co Carlow and one from Co Cork, will be off the road driving for six months and will have to resit their driving test.

Last year, a driver from Co Tipperary became the first person to be disqualified under the penalty points system. The Department's latest statistics show 153,000 drivers now have penalty points, including 35 with 10 points.

The majority of penalty points were awarded for speeding and the failure to wear a front or rear seat belt.

Around 70 drivers received five penalty points for driving without insurance. There were 16 uninsured drivers convicted for this offence in both Donegal and Wexford, compared to just five in Dublin.

No drivers have yet been convicted for careless driving, which was introduced as an offence under the penalty points system in June, carrying five points.

The Minister for Transport, Mr Brennan, said he was concerned about the number of accidents involving single vehicles. Since January, there have been 76 people killed in such accidents compared to 64 deaths during the same period last year.

He said the Medical Bureau of Road Safety would examine the factors behind the accidents, which mainly take place between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. at weekends. The Bureau will investigate the cause, time, location, age profile and check for evidence of drink or drugs.
