Two men in their 30s are re covering in hospital after being injured in separate attacks in the North. Police suspect that the assaults were carried out by loyalist paramilitaries.

One man suffered a broken arm and leg, and head and facial injuries, when he was attacked in his home at Abbot Walk, Newtownards, yesterday. Four masked men, armed with handguns and baseball bats, forced their way through the front door of the house at 1 a.m.

In another attack a man suffered gunshot wounds to the leg and hand. The shooting incident took place on Tuesday at 10 p.m. in his home in Don egall Pass in south Belfast.

The British government has been urged to use the new antiterrorism measures against paramilitaries carrying out such attacks.
