Police in northern Ireland have arrested two 20-year-old men as part of their investigation into the death of David Cupples who died in hospital on Christmas Day from injuries sustained in a severe beating in north Belfast last Sunday.
Mr Cupples (25), a 25-year-old Protestant with an address at the Braniel Estate in east Belfast was attacked in the predominantly loyalist area of Clifton Park Avenue, in the north of the city.
Police said that the extent of his injuries indicated that some sort of object was used to strike the victim. It is understood Mr Cupples was on his way to the Girdwood Army base where he was a civilian worker before the assault.
The police said at the time they had no clear motive but were investigating the possibility he may have been mistaken for a Catholic.
They went back to the scene this morning to speak to motorists and hand out leaflets in a fresh appeal for information about the murder.
