There were two deaths on the roads yesterday. A university student was killed in Galway when a car mounted the footpath and struck her. Ms Frances Rushe (20), from Sligo, was walking at Quincentennial Bridge when the car went out of control.

In Dublin, a motorcyclist, Mr Anthony Jordan (38), of Del Selby Park, Jobstown, Tallaght, died when his bike skidded into the back of a milk lorry. Gardai are appealing for witnesses to the accident, which happened at about 6.10 a.m. at Christchurch Place.

An elderly woman who died in a traffic accident in Co Limerick was named yesterday as Ms Ellen Cregan (72) a widow, of Cregan's Cross, Newcastle West. She was struck by a car at Ballingowan on the Limerick to Killarney road on Tuesday. She was taken by ambulance to Limerick Regional hospital.
